When To Save Or Spend On System Simulation Training

In this article, PulseLearning explores when to spend on system simulation training and when it might be best to invest your training dollars elsewhere.

How To Know When To Save Or Spend On System Simulation Training

Systems simulations for training software and processes are a growing demand in the eLearning industry; however, they may not always be necessary or the best educational approach for your learners. As a follow up to our Simulation Training for Corporate Training eBook shared last month, PulseLearning explores when to spend on system simulation training and when it might be best to invest your training dollars elsewhere.

When To Spend On System Simulation Training

1. When Repeated Errors Are Being Made.

Are your employees making common errors too often? If so, there might be an issue with the software, system, or process that needs correcting, or perhaps employees have been taught incorrectly, or maybe it’s just not obvious how to go about the task. Regardless of the reason, if time and money are being wasted by mistakes, simulation training may be a valuable asset to give employees the real-deal experience to lock-in learning. Key tasks and processes can be demonstrated using “show me” style simulations; then learners can practice through assessed “try me” simulations.

2. When The Experience Is Unique.

Will your employees have used a system, software, or process similar to the one you are providing training in? If so, the skills and knowledge might be transferable. If you’re dealing with something truly unique, then it’s likely that systems simulations will be effective for showing employees how everything works and then allowing them a safe, consequence-free practice ground to try things out. Remember, not everyone will have the same previous experience, so consider the range of your learners’ competencies when making your decision.

3. When Damage Can Be Done.

Is there live data that could be lost, accidently publicized, or incorrectly edited if you let learners loose on a system they are learning to use? This is a key question to ask if you have been considering providing live access to the software, system, or process, even if supported by sound reference materials. It just might not be the best option and the potential damage done could significantly outweigh the initial investment of systems training.

When To Save On System Simulation Training

1. When Software Is Intuitive And Easy To Learn.

How complex is the software? Is it user friendly and easy to navigate? Weighing your responses to these questions could help you finalize your decision. Think about social media platforms and how intuitive they are to use. It’s unlikely that any of us had Facebook lessons and yet most of us consider ourselves pros! If your software, system, or process expertly incorporates user experience principles, perhaps you can let your employees explore for themselves. If there is live data that could be affected, you might need to provide access to a “sand box” test environment instead.

2. When Software Or Processes Have A Short Shelf Life.

Are you expecting the software, system, or process to be updated again in the near future? If so, investing in systems simulations at this stage might not be the most financially viable option. Instead, you could use a temporary solution such as a set of clear, concise quick reference guide PDFs until longevity is confirmed.

3. When Learners Are Mobile.

Are your learners using mobile devices most of the time? You need to consider that mobile devices don’t provide much screen real estate, so it can be difficult to fit a systems simulation on screen once you add a module interface to the dimensions. You can also fall prey to the “screen within a screen” syndrome, meaning that if the systems simulation creates additional issues due to being a re-created experience, you might just be better off letting your learners explore the real thing.
