DevLearn 2015 | What we learned

The PulseLearning team are just catching up from a very busy few weeks after DevLearn 2015. The theme for DevLearn was \”Innovation in the Making\” and it did not disappoint. Here we share some of our key takeaway moment from Las Vegas.

While the theme was broad, the tagline “DevLearn 2015 will inspire the innovator in you to discover what technology makes possible for learning today and to examine and experiment with all the growing opportunities for tomorrow.” was true to point. We discovered how technology in learning can help global businesses overcome common training challenges in the industry today.

1. Lessons Learned in Mobile Learning
Different companies require different approaches to training to meet the needs of their intended audiences. In this session, real-world examples were used to focus attendees on satisfying the needs of end users through mobile learning. A review of some of the most common challenges to effective mobile learning provided attendees with the means to turn the theory presented into takeaways that could be put into practice.

The most common challenges include:

• Bring Your Own Device

• Responsive Design

• Security

2. Lessons from the Trenches of Digital Game Design
Five learning games were analyzed from the perspectives of fun and effectiveness for the end user. Each game demonstrated how to avoid the pitfalls of poor game design and to help turn the concepts into practice.

3. Analytics and xAPI: Measure Your Way to Success
This session focused on Experience API (xAPI) and looking deeper into how data can influence future design and learning environment decisions. The topics discussed included how a company use case should include descriptions and explanations of how learning analytics and the xAPI can be applied, including needs analysis, solution design, data collection, data visualization, solution monitoring, and building on success. The session leaders explained how analytics can be used to address workplace performance challenges and how to leverage the xAPI.

There were also many sessions ranging on topics from the neuroscience behind how we learn, to exploring how badges and digital credentials are redefining how we track and report on learning.

David Pogue, Founder & Columnist, Yahoo! Tech, did a session on Learning Disrupted that was interesting and informative and DemoFest showcased some fantastic examples of industry work.

DevLearn 2015 was a great learning experience for the PulseLearning team. We are excited to see how these trends will impact the industry going forward and are eager to test elements within our custom eLearning solutions. Thank you to the eLearning Guild for organizing such an exceptional event. It is fantastic to see the growing demand for events like this across the Learning industry. We look forward to attending Learning Solutions 2016 in March.
